: Overview
Terem EAD, Sofia, as a successor to the Military Repair Bases and Factories Department of the Ministry of Defence was established through a Resolution of the Council of Ministers in 1965. It was constructed as an economic entity incorporating the military repair factories of the Ministry of Defence for meeting the Bulgarian Army’s armament and equipment repair demands.
During the period from 1965 to 1988 the Department provided armament and equipment repair and modernization, and manufacture of the related spare parts to the Bulgarian Army, as well as export of aviation equipment repair, ship repair, armored vehicle production, complete sets, units and spare parts for other countries.
At present the company comprises 6 daughter companies and participates in another two companies performing repair, modernization and logistic support of:
- aviation equipment – aircraft, aircraft engines, helicopters and aircraft service equipment
- ship repair – ships, armament and equipment for the Navy
- armoured vehicles – tanks, track and wheeled armored vehicles, trucks and light trucks, jeeps, coaches and spare parts production
- small arms, artillery weapons, missile systems, and ammunition
- radiolocation and communication equipment
With its available production capacities and staff Terem EAD not only meets the Bulgarian Army demands but also exports repair, weapons, equipment and spares. The company also manufactures civilian machine-building products and serves as an example in the business dealing with procurement and support of armaments and military technical equipment for the Bulgarian Army.
Terem EAD is a prime leader on the Bulgarian home market regarding repair of armaments and equipment for the National Security System. Terem EAD is the only company throughout the whole country which has at its disposal the production capacities and qualified staff required for the performance of this activity.
The repair capacity of the company regarding aviation engines and aircraft ensures a serious position for Terem EAD on the international markets in this field of activity. Terem EAD possesses production equipment which is unique for Bulgaria (Flexible Automated Production System, CNC machines, eroding machines, clean rooms) and which guarantees high-technology repair and spare parts production.
Pursuant to the requirements of the Classified Information Protection Act Terem EAD and its daughter companies provide the conditions required for storage and protection of classified information.
These prerequisites make possible the growth of the following sales trends on the national market:
- Participation in programs for repair, modernization, production, utilization and logistic support of armaments and equipment for the Bulgarian Army
- Enlargement of civilian production on the basis of technologies to be implemented in connection with the rearmament of the Bulgarian Army
Since 2003 the company has actively been involved in cooperation with foreign companies regarding modernization programmes of the Bulgarian Army armaments and equipment:
- Modernization of RLS P-37 and P-18
- Modernization of BTR-60PB APCs
- Life extension and operation of MIG-29 on a “technical condition” basis
- Modernization of Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters
It is envisaged that during the forthcoming years the company will take part in modernization of aviation equipment, armoured vehicles, anti-aircraft missile systems, ships, dieselization of the automotive vehicle fleet, etc. meeting the demands and under programmes of the Bulgarian Army.
Since 2000 Terem EAD has been successfully participating in programs for destruction, utilization and demilitarization of surplus armaments, ammunition, anti-aircraft missile systems and equipment of the Bulgarian Army.
In this regard, projects, some being financed through programmes of the UN and the USA State Department, have been accomplished:
- Utilization of anti-personnel mines
- Utilization of small arms and light weapons
- Utilization of SS23, Frog and Scud Missile Systems
Some NATO’s Southern Wing countries are also interested in utilization of ammunition, armaments and equipment in Terem EAD. In this connection we are working for widening the company’s utilization production capacity while strictly observing the applicable environmental legislation.
